The dilemma is a product of humanity's need to label things as right and wrong. That's hard to do when there's no real indication of which is more useful to us as a society, as wrong normally means sociopathic and right generally means helpful to the orderly reproduction and continuation of our species.

I really hope that POD sheds its current stigma. It can be extremely economic and can look beautiful. Shock Totem is POD and when you hold it in your hands, it's a substantial, well-made book.

I think a lot of us are just wishing for the dreamboat book deal and don't want to sully it by becoming "a POD author". Ultimately, though, we're running out of friggin' choices. I am definitely considering e-books and Lulu for when I finish prettying Amity up for querying.

I have often wondered why authors don't take the time/effort to PDF their manuscripts in an attractive way and sell them digitally via fre sources like Wordpress and Blogger. of course, if you are anti-e-book like me, you could go the LuLu route. Aaron: exactly...there are some bad fan flicks out there, but they tend to get credit for trying. Maybe authors are held to higher standards? I don't know. As long as we're careful self-editors (and get some outside editing counsel), POD shouldn't be as stigmatized as it is.

Jamie: that's what I figure, too. The wheel is going to spin, and if you can recognize that, you can hopefully be at the right part of the wheel at the right time. Hopefully.

I had to read this a couple of times and digest overnight. Brilliant. "Do it yourself" in film and music has been a badge of honor for years. Do it yourself in publishing...especially fiction...not so much. Why is that? Don't gatekeepers exist for music and film, too?

My reaction was exactly the same when I saw it for the first time a few years back. My friend and I were at Serenity on opening night with all the other Browncoats, and it's amazing how many pissed off people there are out there for the same reason!

It truly is TV at its finest. I still think of the characters all the time.
